Dial-Up Networking on
Linux with KDE
Note:
The guide asumes that a modem is configured on the system as the device
/dev/modem. If your modem uses a different device name, as root
make a symlink and then follow these steps.
For modem installation, or modem
brand recommendation please consult one of our technicians.
This configuration steps apply to
Linux distributions with KDE desktop environment, and
its dialer kppp. RedHat, Fedora Core, Mandrake, Lycoris,
Linspire, Gentoo, Xandros, Mephis, Knoppix, Debian users can follow this
guide. Since SuSE use a custom dialer so is not included.
I. Dial-Up Connection
1. Open the kppp program by either double click its icon on the
desktop, or by selecting K Menu, then Internet,
and click Internet Dial Up.

2. When the Internet Dial Up (kppp) windows appears
onscreen, select the Configure... button.

3. On the KPPP Configuration window, under the
Accounts section, select the New
button.

4. Now select the option Manual Setup.
5. The New Account window appears. In
Connection name type mundolink.net, then press
the Add button.

6. In the Enter a phone number
field type the access numer for your area. Metro Area users type
787-474-9980. Users outside Metro Area check
here for your
access number.
After you enter the number, press OK.

7. You are back in the New Account
window. Now select the DNS tab.
Under this category look for the
Configuration option and select
Automatic, then press OK.
8. On the KPPP Configuration screen, select the
Modems tab. If no modem is visible on the list, select
the New button. If a modem is available, click its name
and click OK, then continue on step 10.

9. On the New Modem window, enter the following:
- Modem name: mymodem (here can
be anything you want)
- Modem device: /dev/modem
(important, only supported)
- Flow control: Hardware
[CRTSCTS]
- Line termination: CR
- Connection speed: 115200
After setting everything, then press OK, and
press OK again.

10. Type your username in the Login ID
field and your password in the Password field. If you
want to connect now just select Connect button.

11. Any time you want to connect to the Internet in the
future, just open the Internet Dial Up
tool (kppp) as you do in the first
steps, and select Connect.
You have configured Linux for
dial up access.
Enjoy your Internet connection.
